Great Ocean Road and Goldfields 3-Day Self Drive

Be awed with natural and man made wonders in abundance on your self drive holiday to the Great Ocean Road and the Goldfields of Victoria; the 12 Apostles, historic Cape Otway, watch whales in season, seaside townships and Apollo Bay. Explore fertile farmlands en-route to Ballarat, built on the riches of the goldrush days with grand buildings, wide streets and see history come alive at Sovereign Hill as gold is mined 1800′ style.

The suggested time is my personal experience and it’s just for your reference.

Day 1
Departing from Melbourne CBD at 9am

1h30min -> Waterfront Geelong (1hr)
A great coastal city for your relax and seafood snack experience.

30min -> Torquay (1hr)
Another beautiful town for best lunch before heading to Great Ocean Road.

1hr -> Teddy’s Lookout, Lorne (30min)
A 15-minute short walk from parking will lead you to an iconic Great Ocean Road photography spot.

5min -> Sheoak Falls (45min)
One of the best easy-to-access falls for photography.

1hr -> Apollo Bay
One of the beautiful-est and best city on Great Ocean Road. While Marriners Lookout is the best sunset viewing spot, cafe and museum are worth visiting to spend your day. Plenty of accommodations are available.

Day 2
Departing from Apollo Bay at 9am. Prepare your lunch box and better get the food ready if you’re planning to cook at night

30min -> Mait’s Rest Rainforest Walk (30min)
An easy wooden track for your warm-up, with the wonderful rain forest.

30min -> Cape Otways Lighthouse (1h)
While the lighthouse may not be too attractive to you, koala bears on the way must be surprising

1h30min -> Gibson Step (45min), The Twelve Apostles (45hr), Loch Ard Gorge (1h)
All these neighboring viewing spots offer different views and experience to one of the most popular attraction in the world.

30min -> London Bridge (30min)
Another viewing spot, with similar scenery though, is a good place to relax.

10min -> Port Campbell
A quite and peaceful small town to stay. Better reserve the accommodation and prepare everything you need in advance.

Day 3
Departing from Port Campbell at 9am

2h -> Ballarat (2h)
A beautiful and historic Victorian city, with heaps of historic building conserved. Church and Art Gallery of Ballarat are those you shouldn’t miss. Lots for options for a lunch break as well.

5min -> Sovereign hill (2hr30min)
The only Victorian goldfield with excellent comprehensive package and guides.

15min -> Kryal Castle (15min)
With a nice exterior wall I would suggest to have a stop and take some photos.

1h30min -> Melbourne
An easy freeway would lead you back to Melbourne from Ballarat
